Year 5 design dementia friendly games for local care home

Year 5 design dementia friendly games for local care home Year 5 pupils visited Clara Court care home to donate the dementia friendly games they have designed and made in their Design and Technology lessons. The children had the idea of making the games, after seeing their Art and Textiles teacher, Mrs Jeanette Scrace, making a memory cushion for her own elderly mother.

Mrs Scrace and Mrs Coope said we were looking for a project that involved the wider community, and both thought dementia friendly games would be a great way of fostering children’s awareness of the differing needs of the older generations. Through videos, discussions and personal anecdote, the pupils became aware of the kind of things that they would have to take note of when designing their games. They took account of failing eyesight, decreased joint mobility, loss of short term memory, weakness of grip and the importance of texture, when creating their games.

The visit was a huge success on both sides. The children introduced and demonstrated their games, later playing them with the residents. One of the pupils, Hamish Walker, commented, ‘ The best bit about visiting Clara Court, was the joy on the residents’ faces when they won a game; it made me feel special.’ Another pupil, Lexie Barnard recounted that she, ‘… really enjoyed visiting the home. It gave me a chance to step into their life and it shows me what I might go through when I’m older. The visit has prompted the idea of further connections, on a regular basis, between the home and the school.

Summer Ball's sparkling success

Summer Ball Saturday night saw our Diamonds Are Forever Summer Ball at the school with the largest number of guests attending. Organised by a dedicated team of parents in our St Piran's Society, we are delighted that the evening provided such fabulous entertainment with a live band and some excellent food to enjoy. Mr Carroll even made a guest appearance on vocals with the band! Although we are still finalising the accounts for the evening, the live and silent auctions on the night made around £21,000 which is a tremendous total and will be split between the school and the Link Foundation charity. Thank you to all who came or supported the event this year.

Class charity fair this afternoon

Class charity fair this afternoon Each class has nominated a charity to support and will run stalls selling ice creams, throwing sponges, eating candy floss or beating the goalie and many more this afternoon to raise money! All children will have the opportunity to visit the fair and spend their money on the many fun games and stalls in the sunshine. Some of the money raised will be going to those affected by the devastating Grenfell Tower fire this week.
