Welcome to St Piran's Maidenhead
Entry to School
For all stages of school, parents are first seen by the Headmaster and shown around the school.
Depending on the age of the child, different entry criteria apply, as explained below. This enables us to know as much as we can about each child before they come into the school, so we can best cater for their needs.
There are no formal assessments for applicants to Nursery, but parents meet the Head of Nursery and visit the Nursery Department.
For entry into Reception to Year 2, we request a copy of the child's most recent report from their current school, nursery or play group. All the children are seen by the Head of Pre-Prep and a little assessment is given. We often ask the child to spend a morning in a Reception class.
Prospective pupils complete a Literacy and Numeracy test along with reading and spelling tests and a report may be requested from the previous school. Children are then often invited to spend some time in the Year 3 or 4 class into which they might go.
We request a copy of a recent report from the child's current school for those wishing to enter from Years 5 to 6. Pupils will spend a day in the class into which they would start and during the day a variety of assessments will be set, including an English assessment and an NFER Maths test.
If there are signs that a child has special needs, then the SENCO will be asked to assess the child to see if the school can meet these needs before a decision can be made.
Entry by scholarship usually involves testing and interviewing the pupils. Non verbal reasoning, reading, writing, and mathematical skills are usually tested during a morning in school.
